Working with The Mob and director Paul W. S. Anderson (Alien Vs Predator, Event Horizon, Pompeii), this series of three short action films announced Volkswagen’s continuing sponsorship of cinema, whilst also promoting the vehicle’s new safety features
The client wanted the music to recreate the high-octane energy of a Hollywood blockbuster, whilst also delivering the tagline, 'Made for real life, not the movies', with the signature VW tongue-in-cheek humour and the premise that the new VW’s safety features are so efficient, that it would have no place in an explosive Hollywood action movie.
The agency and director requested to work specifically with two of Felt’s most experienced composers. The three stylistically distinct soundtracks were composed from the ground up to fit each film perfectly and punctuate specific visual and narrative events. The main challenge was to ensure that the composition switched seamlessly from high-energy action to delicate humour and we presented the client with a number of different compositional solutions before agreeing on the final idea.
The composers worked to a detailed brief and then fine-tuned the soundtracks following regular dialogue with the producers. Through experimentation we got to the essence of how the punchline and VW humor could be achieved musically. It was clear that a change in instrumentation was needed so the composers went from big, bombastic orchestral palettes, during the action sequences, to a light, dainty and apologetic-sounding motif over the taglines and packshots.
The films were mixed in surround and shown at cinemas across the country. The client, director and production company were delighted with the final composition. The films were susequently rolled out in Spain and France due to their popularity in the UK.
